A table for the whole day on Lewes High Street

Sussex produce cooked with a Mediterranean hand. Brunch from nine, a candlelit bistro from five. Opening soon.

A new kitchen in an old printing town

Lewes has been printing, brewing and debating for centuries. We would like to add a good breakfast to the list.

Lewes has printed its own newspaper since the 1740s, and in the late 1760s a young excise officer called Thomas Paine sharpened his arguments over supper in the town’s taverns. Olden opens in that spirit: a place to sit, eat well and talk for as long as you like.

The cooking is Modern British with a Mediterranean accent. In the morning that means sourdough from down the road, eggs with deep orange yolks and coffee made with care.

Brunch by day, bistro by night.

By evening the lights drop, the candles come out and the menu turns to day-boat fish, South Downs lamb and a glass of something from a Sussex vineyard.

We buy close to home, change the board with the seasons and keep the room relaxed. Come in walking boots at ten or dressed up at eight; the table is the same.

From the Downs to the Coast

Lewes sits in a gap in the South Downs where the Ouse runs down to the sea. Almost everything we cook comes from somewhere along that line.

    South Downs lamb

Raised on the chalk grassland that rings the town, then cooked over coals and served with salsa verde.

On the menu: South Downs Lamb Rump
  2. The chalk slopes

    Sussex sparkling wine

The same chalk that runs under Champagne runs under Sussex. Our house fizz comes from a nearby estate.

On the menu: Sussex Sparkling Wine
  3. Lewes High Street

    Lewes sourdough

Baked in town each morning. Toasted under your eggs at ten, torn at the table by eight.

On the menu: Smashed Avocado & Poached Eggs
  4. By the river Ouse

    Local cask ale

Brewed a short walk from our door and pulled properly, at cellar temperature.

On the menu: Lewes Best Bitter
  5. Newhaven harbour

    Day-boat fish

Landed about seven miles downriver by small boats that go out and come back the same day.

    On the menu: Day-Boat Hake
